🏛️ Politics
Ruto's coalition, with the UDA and Oburu Oginga's ODM, dominates power. The opposition is reorganizing after the death of Raila Odinga: Kalonzo Musyoka on one side, and Edwin Sifuna on the other, who has taken the leadership of The Equitable Party (TEP) and of the Linda Mwananchi movement. The general election is set for 10 August 2027. On the diplomatic front, Kenya has announced the reopening of its land border with Somalia, closed since 2011. It has concluded a preliminary trade agreement with China. It also maintains police officers in the multinational mission in Haiti.
⚖️ Economy and society
China is preparing to eliminate customs duties on more than 98% of Kenyan exports, according to the preliminary agreement announced in January. Exports to the United States remain subject to a 10% duty, and AGOA has been extended until the end of 2026. The government is hardening its stance toward foreign traders in small-scale retail. The drought is causing a milk shortage, and Ruto has ordered the import of buffaloes and camels. The cabinet approved 45.4 billion Ksh to restructure Kenya Airways. It also approved a 1.1 billion Ksh program for electric cookers.
